Since we are all in lock down lets expand our skincare knowledge!!!!!
🔻Determining your skin type🔻
🌻Many people will use skincare products on their skin with no consideration as to whether it is suited to their skin type.
It is important to recognise that skin TYPES and skin CONDITIONS are two different things.
🌻Your skin TYPE is determined by your genetics and either falls into the category of oily, dry, normal or a combination of any of these. We cannot change our skin type, only maintain it.
🌻Skin CONDITIONS are things that can affect our skin no matter which skin type we have although some types are more prone to certain conditions such as acne, dehydration, sensitivity or pigmentation. They can be caused by our lifestyle and can be improved.
🌻If your skin is oily you will have a visible shine to the surface of your skin. Makeup will not last long and easily slide off. Your skin pores will be large and can be prone to acne. It can feel bumpy to the touch and appear thick and dull.
🌻If your skin is dry it will often feel tight after washing it with water, it will have very small pores and no shine. It can feel rough to the touch, possibly flakey patches and often be prone to redness and visible capillaries.
🌻Normal skin is just like what you will see in any baby or young child. It is healthy, even coloured, soft and smooth.
🌻It is possible to have any skin type alongside any or all skin conditions and often someone with a dehydrated skin (lacking water) will confuse it for having a dry skin (lacking oil) and use a heavier moisturiser than what they actually need which can result in bumpy uneven skin.
🌻Or what I often come across, is normal skin suffering hormonal acne which is mistaken for being an oily skin. Harsh products are then used to ‘dry’ the acne. This creates a whole new level of concerns as the skin actually needs oil to be healthy and free from bacteria! When the skin is stripped of oil it simply creates more oil, and if the surface of the skin has become too dehydrated from incorrect skincare the oil will not distribute evenly and therefore create congestion and more acne as well as redness, uneven skin tone and possibly even premature ageing.
🌻Many of you may say “I don't care about my skin”, or “I never really even look at it” but it often can be one of the first things someone else notices (“look at your tan” “oh you have that pregnancy glow” etc)
🌻We only get one skin in our lifetime and prevention is certainly easier than cure especially when it comes to damaged skin, premature ageing, pigmentation and even melanoma. So take this moment to look in the mirror and do a quick skin health check, does it look fresh and clear and healthy? Does it feel reasonably smooth and supple for your age? Some issues may be fixed with a regular skin treatment or new skincare products but if you notice any new or changing moles, lumps or patches that concern you please see your GP. You may spend $100,s on a new outfit and only wear it once but you wear your skin every day of your life, it's worth the investment!
